The Imperial Hotel – Erskineville 2018
The lead time on this job was really tight, the brief by Alexander & Co. Architects was to create a piece that paid respect to Sydney’s queer culture. We didn’t have a lot of time to design and compose, so the 3D images Reuben Hill created really helped to speed up the feedback process with the clients.
The ceiling panels needed to be perforated to absorb the music from the nightly drag performance so it was impossible to paint directly onto the ceiling. We considered a few possibilities and decided that the only way to get this job finished on time would be to design in photoshop, get the image printed onto raw canvas and paint the surface with oil paints to create a hand painted look.
The installation of the canvas strips onto the ceiling was probably the most stressful part of this job.
The process of finding a creative solution under pressure had to be the most satisfying.
