OPera Australia, Sydney Opera House – the merry widow

Designer Michael Scott Mitchell and director Graham Murphy are the creative team behind this spectacular production of The Merry Widow.

Nathan Hawkes took the lead role in painting this 22m x 8m cyclorama inspired by french impressionist Claude Monet’s series of water lily paintings.

We painted four of these huge cloths, going through a rigorous sampling process to decide the process, eventually the lighting designer expressed his wish to light portions of the cloth from behind so we went with unprimed 10 ounce canvas. Nathan quickly developed a technique to emulate how Monet painted, the rest of us just followed his lead in awe!
